UPSC's photo rule is stricter than most: the image must be recent and the name and date of the photograph must be visible on the photo itself. Type the name exactly as it appears in your application, then check the spelling in the preview before downloading.

How to resize a UPSC Photo
- Choose the UPSC Photo preset. It is already selected on this page: 350 × 350 px at 300 DPI, with a 20–300 KB working range.
- Upload your photo. Use a recent, front-facing photograph with a plain light background. Keep the full face, both ears and the top of the head inside the frame.
- Download and check the file. The target is 80 KB. Confirm the output size shown by the tool, then upload the downloaded file to the official portal before the form closes.
Official UPSC photo rules
- Upload a JPEG between 20 KB and 300 KB.
- Keep the image within the 350 × 350 px minimum and 1000 × 1000 px maximum box.
- Use a plain white or off-white background with the face filling about 75% of the frame.
- Print the candidate's full name and the date of the photograph at the bottom. The photo should not be older than 10 days when the application opens.
- Do not submit a scanned print with a border, a selfie crop or a photo with a strong beauty filter.
Why UPSC photo files get rejected
- The name or date of photograph is missing from the bottom of the image.
- The photograph is older than the window allowed in the current notice.
- The face is too small, or the crop cuts off the top of the head or the chin.
- The file is larger than 300 KB or smaller than 20 KB.
- The photo has a visible border, a scanned-paper edge or a coloured background.
Frequently asked questions
Is the name and date of photograph mandatory for UPSC?
Yes for the UPSC OTR and Civil Services application. The photo must show the candidate's name and the date on which the photograph was taken. Use the Name & Date toggle in this tool and check the preview before downloading.
What is the exact UPSC photo size?
The photo must be at least 350 × 350 px and no more than 1000 × 1000 px, as a JPEG between 20 KB and 300 KB. This preset starts at the 350 × 350 px minimum with a 75% face crop.
Can I use a 3:4 photo instead of a square UPSC photo?
UPSC has accepted 3:4 photographs within the 350–1000 px range in some cycles, but the safe choice is a square 350 × 350 px image with the face centred. If the current notice shows a different box, follow the notice.
